Welcome
Everything looks interesting through the lens of a camera.
A good friend
Hello, I’m Matthew.
Welcome to my home for sporadic adventures, fuelled by late-night Skyscanner trawls and budget Interrail itineraries.
As my adventures grew in size and scale, I thought it best to have a digital archive of photographs, routes, and the gritty day-to-day – which is hopefully what you’ve found here. No detail will be spared, which I hope means neither you nor I will repeat any calamities…
Last year, I invested in my now-trusty Fujifilm X-T2 which has since accompanied me from Scotland to Morocco, and everywhere in between. Before then, I made the most of my Pixel 8 Pro but, combined, I have been able to document relaxed, point-of-view perspectives such as hikes across Britain and Ireland, treks through the Atlas Mountains, and a colossal US West Coast Road Trip.

To me, photography is a fantastic way to focus and appreciate my surroundings when travelling, or even just commuting!
My first real ‘holiday’ was to the Netherlands with my pals, since then we’ve upped the stakes with interrailing and epic road trips.
My main hobbies are: cooking, running (RIP knees), playing piano, and taking selfies up mountains to show my mum I’m still alive.

So… what is matt.roams?
Is this just another post-grad travel blog? Nice photos, but what are you up to? What makes you so different?
These are all excellent questions, which I am choosing to ignore…
Alright, fair enough. Let me explain: matt.roams is a resource! Over time, this site will expand with information about hostelling, interrail travel, and documenting real experiences through photography.
I believe that travel is a balance of time, budget, and energy. Focus too hard in one direction, and the others will suffer (I think my friends would agree that we tend to sacrifice time and energy…)
Here, I will be sharing detailed itineraries and activities for my own records, but also to discuss and improve over time. You’ll find an authentic and honest perspective, supported by my straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) workflow to give timely and accurate views of various locations; from California to Istanbul, and Scotland to Morocco.
Open the discussion through Reddit, Instagram, or YouTube. I’m always open to suggestions for destinations and/or collaboration.
